Message from Governor Bob Wise

Threats of natural disasters, accidents and terrorist attacks have caused us to increase our awareness and preparation for the safety of our families and neighborhoods.  In West Virginia, the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety coordinates efforts of all state agencies to respond to emergencies that exceed county resources.  These efforts are important.  But our families, neighborhoods and local communities also have an important responsibility.  Knowing what to do and what not to do in any emergency could be the difference between life and death.

This booklet provides essential information about potential emergencies and how to be prepared.  These suggestions and guidelines come from the Red Cross, FEMA and other agencies and communities as well as our own experience in West Virginia.

I hope you will discuss this with your family and neighbors.  We all need to work together to keep our families safe.

                                          Very truly yours,

                                    Bob Wise

This booklet provides families, neighborhoods and local communities in West Virginia with basic information and suggestions on how to prepare for unexpected emergencies.

It is important for everyone always to be prepared for natural disasters such as ice storms, tornadoes, forest fires and floods, and man-made disasters such as train accidents or chemical spills, as well as for terrorist attacks.

Many preparations that you and your families can take are similar for any type of disaster and are covered in this booklet.
